Assembly of TreesIn partnership with Islandwoods and Trip Hek
9 - 18 June 2022, 60 trees, 60 logs, sawdust, and hemp rope
Assembly of Trees consisted of local trees and logs. This installation, which was halfway between a parliament, stand, and shelter, brought together forest, trees, timber production, and people. An entrance made of stacked planks and a path through the forest led to the installation where using a QR code, the audience could listen to Jente Hoogeveen’s essay Tot het bos (To the forest), which addresses the question: what does it mean when the non-human environment, in this case, the forest of Terschelling, is central to thinking, experiencing and acting? During the Oerol Festival, five workshops took place in the installation. The outcomes led to the manifesto Het Bos spreekt, fundamentals of the forest. Vermijs built Assembly of Trees according to the circular production principle. Local sawmill Islandwoods borrowed the wood and logs for this occasion. Upon completion, the material returned to be further processed in the regular wood production process.
